Seoul, Korea, April 30, 2021 – Global leading tire company Hankook Tire was awarded Carbon Management Sector Honors by CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) in recognition of its performance in climate change response and water security.

CDP is an international non-profit organization that assesses companies’ environmental transparency and action on climate change, forests and water security disclosures. Along with the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the annual CDP report is deemed one of the most trusted indicators for environmental, social, and corporate governance. It scores companies from D- to A. Hankook Tire achieved A- in CDP’s 2020 scoring results.

In recognition of Hankook’s commitment to environmental sustainability management, CDP awarded Hankook Tire with the Carbon Management Sector Honors. The award was given at the CDP Climate Change Korea Awards 2020 hosted by CDP Korea Commission on April 28. This is not the first time that CDP had acknowledged Hankook’s dedication for environmental transparency and action, as Hankook had previously won the Carbon Management Sector Honors four times in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018. Furthermore, Hankook was named to 2018 CDP Supplier Engagement Leaderboard, standing among the higest rated companies for supplier engagement on climate change.

This achievement underlines Hankook’s commitment to its CSR goals which include using 100% sustainable materials by 2050 and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050 compared to 2018. The company also participates in sustainability initiatives with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and promotes CSR-related policies such as the Sustainable Natural Rubber Policy.

Hankook is incorporating environment-caring initiatives not only in the production process but also in R&D. For example, Hankook has minimized the rolling resistance of tires to improve fuel efficiency of vehicles and ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company pioneers in activities such as calculating greenhouse gas mitigation amount into monetary value and reflecting it in the investment process.

“Hankook has long been seeing climate change as a critical issue and has been very commited to environmental sustainability,” says Sooil Lee, President and CEO of Hankook Tire & Technology. “We will continue put our efforts to make the world a more sustainable place. Our efforts inlcude a transparent disclosure of information on climate change response every year as well as taking the lead in pioneering eco-friendly products.”

In addition to the recognition from the CDP, Hankook’s efforts in environmental sustainability resulted in several achievements recently. Hankook was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices World for the fifth consecutive year, and awarded a platinum medal by EcoVadis, one of the highest recognition for achievements in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility. The fact that this medal is only awarded to companies in the top 1% of their industry sector adds significance. The company has also won the gold award, the highest accomplishment, with its CSR report 2019-20 at the 2020 Galaxy Awards organized by MerComm Inc.
